Should a Christian attend a same-sex “wedding?”
Should I use preferred pronouns?
Is IVF ethical?
Questions like these pervade every inch of our society. Not only our society but also our churches.
In fact, Christianity in America has become increasingly divided on these moral questions.
For example, when it comes to the question of whether or not Christians should attend a same-sex “wedding,” answers vary amongst notable ministries.
Focus on the Family received a question from a supporter on whether or not they should attend their family member’s same-sex “wedding.” In answer, Focus on the Family wrote,
“Focus on the Family cannot advise you to attend this event. Our position on homosexual behavior and same-sex marriage is well known to everyone who is familiar with our ministry. We believe that homosexual unions are inconsistent with God’s design for human sexuality as set forth in the opening pages of the Bible and in the words of Jesus Himself: ‘From the beginning of creation, God made them male and female. For this cause a man shall leave his father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh…’ (Mark 10:6-8; quoting Genesis 1:27 and 2:24).”
But Alistair Begg, senior pastor of Parkside Church and founder of Truth For Life, came under heavy fire for his answer to the same question of whether or not Christians should attend a same-sex “wedding.”
When asked by a grandmother whether or not she should attend her grandson’s same-sex “wedding,” Begg answered that she should not only attend the ceremony but also “buy them a gift:”
“Well, here’s the thing: your love for them may catch them off guard, but your absence will simply reinforce the fact that they said, ‘These people are what I always thought: judgmental, critical, unprepared to countenance anything.’”
In an age of increasing confusion over moral issues like these, clarity amongst Christians is desperately needed.
Seeing this increasing need for clarity on these hard questions, The Colson Center launched its resource, What Would You Say?
What Would You Say? gives quick answers to hard questions:
“In a world where ‘truth’ seems to change every five minutes, What Would You Say? gives you quick answers for today’s hardest questions. Each five-minute video helps you navigate today’s tricky cultural assumptions with clarity, confidence, and courage.”
